The story
The world map from the first modern atlas, and for forty years the picture most educated Europeans had in their heads. Ortelius set the oval world in a border of cloud scrolls and put a line of Cicero beneath it, asking what in human affairs can seem important to a man who knows the whole of eternity and the size of the world. A map that argues for perspective, in both senses.
