The story
Hevelius mapped the sky from Danzig with instruments he built himself and refused, to the end, to use a telescope for measuring — he trusted his own eye and was very nearly right. His constellations are drawn as if seen from outside the celestial sphere, which is why Orion faces the wrong way. The last great star atlas made without a lens.
