The story
Currier & Ives sold the American century to Americans by the sheet, and this is their harbour at its most crowded — masts thick as a wood, ferries crossing, the bridge going up. This is the second state, which is how you date it: the Statue of Liberty stands in the bay, so the plate was reworked after she arrived. A city portrait revised to keep up with the city.
