The story
The carte à figures at its fullest: two hemispheres framed on every side by the peoples of the world in their dress, with the elements personified in the corners. Visscher was selling geography as a spectacle of variety — this is a map you hang, not one you navigate by. The great southern continent is still drawn as an unbroken coast, because nobody had yet sailed far enough south to disprove it.
