The story
Rose returned to his own invention twenty-three years later, at the turn of the century and in the middle of the Boer War. The octopus is back; the faces have aged into new grievances. Read beside the 1877 sheet it becomes a before-and-after of European temper — the same trick, the same continent, a different set of fears.
